January and February are the right months for most oaks, maples and poplars. The tree is bare so the structure is visible, the wounds close as growth starts in spring, and the beetles that move oak wilt from tree to tree are not flying yet. Summer cuts on an oak are the ones to avoid.

Cutting one back to stubs every winter leaves knuckled trunks and a burst of weak, whippy shoots that bend to the ground under the first wet bloom. Thin out suckers, crossing branches and anything growing into the middle, and leave the trunks alone. The shape never comes back once it's gone.

Branches resting on shingles rub off the granules, hold moisture on the roof, drop straight into the gutter and give squirrels a bridge into the attic. A few feet of clearance fixes all four at once.

The swollen ring where a branch meets the trunk is the tissue that seals the wound. Cut just outside it. A flush cut takes that tissue away and a long stub rots back into the trunk, and wound paint doesn't help either one.

Stripping the inner branches and leaving tufts at the ends, sometimes called lion-tailing, puts all the weight out where the limb is weakest and the next storm breaks it. Take no more than a quarter of the live canopy in a year.
