A tree that has grown at an angle for years and has a curve back toward vertical is usually settled. A trunk that has started leaning recently, with cracked or heaved soil and lifted roots on the high side, is a tree to get looked at now rather than after the next storm.

Shelf fungus on the trunk, or a ring of mushrooms coming up out of the root flare, is the fruiting body of a fungus already eating the wood. The canopy can look full and green while the trunk is hollow, so a tree with that at its feet gets a proper look.

If a house, fence, drive or power line sits inside the fall radius, the tree can't be felled in one cut. It has to be climbed and the limbs lowered on ropes in sections, which is a different trade with different gear and different insurance. That is the line where we bring in the tree crew.

Grinding it on the same visit costs less than a second trip with the same machine. A stump left behind sprouts, softens into something termites like, and is a permanent obstacle to mow around.

A trunk that cracked in a storm, or a big limb torn out with the bark stripped down the stem, is a wound the tree can't close over. Middle Tennessee gets straight-line winds most springs, and the tree that came apart in April is often the one on the roof in June.

Yes to both, and the stump costs less done while the crew and the machine are already on site. The trunk, brush and grindings leave with us.
Sometimes. An old lean the tree grew into is usually stable. A new lean with cracked soil or lifted roots is not, and that one wants looking at quickly.
