What we know

What we'd tell you standing in your driveway.

Useful whether or not you ever call us.

01

Do the water-bead test

Pour a little water on the boards. If it beads up, the finish is still protecting the wood. If it soaks in within a few minutes, the deck is ready for stain.

02

Stain above 50°F, with dry days

Stain needs warm air, dry wood going in and no rain for a day or two after. Staining in full midday sun leaves lap marks, so work mornings or shade.

03

Too much pressure fuzzes the wood

Blasting a deck tears up the grain and leaves it furry, and stain goes on blotchy. Wood wants low pressure and a deck cleaner.

04

New lumber needs to dry out

Fresh pressure-treated boards are still wet from treatment. Wait until they pass the water-bead test, often a few months, before staining.

05

Solid stain behaves like paint

It hides more but peels like paint on a surface people walk on, and it's hard to go back from. Semi-transparent wears away instead of flaking.

Questions

What people ask about it.

How often should a deck be stained in Tennessee?

Every two to three years for most semi-transparent stains, sooner on a deck in full sun. The water-bead test tells you when.

When is the best time to stain a deck in Nashville?

April, once it's reliably above 50°F and there's a dry stretch, so the stain has warm, dry days to cure.

Is the stain included in the price?

The labour is the published price. Stain is billed separately, so the material is never buried in the labour.

What we don’t do

A picture tells us more than a form does. Text one over and we'll come back with a price — the message already says what it's about.
