What we know

What we'd tell you standing in your driveway.

Useful whether or not you ever call us.

01

Grey is only surface deep

Sun turns the outer layer of wood fibers grey. A proper wash takes that layer off and the timber underneath is usually still sound.

02

Test it with water

Splash water on a board. Beading means the sealer is still working; dark, fast soaking means it's due.

03

Both sides need doing

A fence sealed on one side still soaks up water from the other. Talk to whoever lives on the other side before the work is scheduled.

04

Keep sprinklers and dirt off the boards

A sprinkler hitting the fence every morning and mulch piled against the bottom boards are what rot a fence from the ground up. Adjust the heads and pull the mulch back.

Questions

What people ask about it.

How often should a wood fence be sealed?

Every two to three years for most fences, sooner on a run that gets full sun. The water test tells you when it's due.

Can a grey fence be brought back?

Usually, yes. The grey is weathered surface fiber, and a proper wash brings the wood back before it's sealed.

Why seal a fence in September?

So it goes into a wet Tennessee winter protected, with warm dry weather to cure the sealer. Sealing in spring means it spent the winter soaking up water.
