Never take more than a third
Cutting off more than a third of the blade in one go stresses the grass and opens it up to weeds. If it got away from you, bring it down over two or three mows instead of one.

Don't scalp it in summer
A fescue lawn cut short in the heat browns out and thins, and the bare spots fill with crabgrass. Bermuda and zoysia are different — they're warm-season grasses and take a lower cut.

Stay off wet clay
Middle Tennessee soil is heavy clay. Mowing it soaked leaves ruts and packs the ground so hard the roots struggle for the rest of the season. Give it a day to drain.

Leave the clippings on the lawn
Short clippings break down in a few days and feed the soil. They don't cause thatch. Just keep them off the drive and out of the storm drain.
