What we know

What we'd tell you standing in your driveway.

Useful whether or not you ever call us.

01

Cut grasses back before new growth

Ornamental grasses and liriope should come down in late February or March, before the green shoots show. Wait too long and you're cutting off this year's growth.

02

Pre-emergent goes down before mulch

Crabgrass preventer works when the soil warms, usually early to mid-March around Nashville, about when forsythia blooms. If someone applies it for you, get that done before the beds are mulched.

03

Don't prune spring bloomers now

Azaleas, forsythia and bigleaf hydrangeas set their flower buds last year. Cut them in March and you cut off the flowers. Shape them after they bloom.

04

Check the depth before adding mulch

If last year's mulch is still two inches deep, loosen it and top it up lightly. Piling a fresh three inches on every spring smothers roots.

Questions

What people ask about it.

When should I do a spring cleanup in Nashville?

March. Late enough that the hard freezes are mostly done, early enough that grasses and perennials haven't started putting out new growth.

Is mulch included in a spring cleanup?

Laying it is. The mulch itself is billed separately, so the material is never buried in the labour price.

Do you apply pre-emergent in the spring?

No. That takes a licence we don't hold. We can work around whoever applies it, so the mulch goes down after.

What we don’t do

  • Pre-emergent or fertilizer applied — that takes a licence we don't hold
